Boo Radley leaves presents in the hole on the tree for Jem and Scout. His leaving presents shows that he is kind and caring. Although most residents of Maycomb believe Boo (Arthur) is creepy and malicious, he can be sweet.
The children are very surprised that someone would leave there goodies out in the open for someone to steal. This shows that they live in a society where stealing is common. A lot of the Maycomb citizens fell on hard times since the Great Depression, so they will do anything to help their family. Scout and Jem try to take the high road by not taking the stuff for a few days to see if anyone will claim it.
Boo must feel really bad seeing the children reenact his life from the gossip they were told. People do not like to be made fun of and this must hurt Boo's feelings. He probably feels really bad for stabbing his father in the leg; he is not heartless.
When Boo laughs at Scout, it shows that he has a sense of humor. He seems to care about the children and he wants them to enjoy life. Boo probably does not want to be rejected by society; if he went outside, everyone would gossip and be rude to him.
